Beach is really getting into all these fake history news-stories on the internet: the champions of which are the generic sounding worldnewsdailyreport, the malodorous yet strangely attractive offspring of National Enquirer rutted with the History Channel. We have reported one of their previous fictions and have an especial joy now in spreading the word that archaeologists working in ‘a wooded area of Eastern Ireland’ have dug up two half metre humans, the final proof that fairies do exist.

There is all the normal nonsense, of course: cleverly and often wittily rigged photographs; invented but credible names (‘Professor Edward James McInnes’ from UCD, who looks like a young Gerry Adams); some pseudo-science (‘but its morphological similarities with modern humans suggest that it evolved as a separate subspecies towards the end of human lineage’); thuggish written English (‘a human subspecies which is believed to have gone extinct’); and a barely coherent but just credible back story (homo minusculus is so small because of scarcity of resources in the last Ice Age). But what Beach found really fascinating were the comments, which he had missed out on last time round. Of course, it is the normal mélange of ignorance and offense: if you ever want to get depressed at humanity watch a documentary on Auschwitz or read the reflections of internet users under a tabloid article. Here are some of the highlights. The majority of users seems to take it seriously.

Makes me wonder will we ever find out more about these new species. There has been nothing found on Homo Floresiensis since Ling Bua 1 was discovered in flores so we may never know more. Amazing find but its a pity we may not find more of this species.

According to the Bible Torah the material world of genesis was full of giants , in jewish myth adams first wife Lilith gave birth to mazakim (goblins) and for the record god is beyond comprehension.

Seeing as they aren’t so old the chances of finding DNA are good

By the time you read this there will be many more.

Why do people fall for this donkey manure? drbeachcombing AT yahoo DOT com It is probably a question of specialities. If you know very little about an area, the elephant trap will yawn and carry you down onto the sharpened stakes below, particularly if you like the implications of the story. The only inoculation is knowledge: and unfortunately we are all so ignorant about so many things…
