A golf duel from the US picked up by a British newspaper in 1927 and so dating to that year?

From America comes an account of a strange duel – a combat with golf clubs and balls as ‘the weapons’ wherewith two disputants went out to seek satisfaction. A St. Louis man and a visitor from Syracuse quarrelled at Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida, over the counting of strokes. Resolving on a ‘duel,’ each armed himself with a driver and an iron and two dozen balls; tees were prepared fifty paces apart; and at the dropping of a hat the duel began. One adversary drove a ball against the other’s shin; the injured man retaliated with an iron shot which got his opponent’s ribs; and the duel was still proceeding when a policeman arrived, cried ‘Fore!’ and stopped the combat.

It may or may not be true: the ‘fore’ is cute, perhaps too cute to be true. At fifty feet Beach is honestly surprised that either hit each other. Still golfers get hole in ones so anything is possible.
