    ghosts

Ghost photograph fakes always have a certain interest, not least because they are usually so clumsily done. However, these, which appeared in the Tatler, 9 Oct 1907, were a cut above. There follow screen captures of the five photographs. The editor has written in ‘The making of ghosts has ever been a favourite pastime of the photographer who is a master of his art. On this page are reproduced four examples of unreal ghosts and one of a ghost that we are given to believe is a real visitant from the spirit world.’ See if you can pick the ‘real’ ghost out.

‘The photographic ghost of a gambler who committed suicide by cutting his throat.’ Cute.

‘A phantom of Bien Boa, a ghost observed and photographed by Professor Charles Richet at Algiers. The mediums used where Mdlle. Martha B… and a negress named Aischa.’ Looks like an itinerant drunk who has found his way into a sect… This is presumably the ‘real’ ghost. Sigh.

‘A photographic ghost that persistently haunted a maid servant.’ Do the washing up! etc

‘An up-to-date ghost who wrote lengthy messages on a typewriter of a most substantial appearance.’ My favourite, probably because this is what I’ll look after my death.

    ‘The bedside ghost’. Mah!
